Periodontology is the branch of dentistry that deals with the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diseases of the tissues that support the teeth, such as gums and bone.

These inflammatory and degenerative diseases, commonly known as gum disease (genetic) or periodontitis, if left untreated, lead to the destruction of the tissues surrounding the teeth and ultimately, tooth loss. In fact, when oral hygiene is neglected, the bacteria that live in the oral cavity form dental plaque, a sticky film where germs can multiply undisturbed, causing tissue degeneration.

Each patient plays a key role in treating periodontal diseases. Gingivitis can in fact be prevented with proper and regular daily care at home (correct use of a toothbrush, dental floss, interdental brushes and mouthwash). To prevent gingivitis and periodontitis, it is therefore important to make regular appointments with a specialist for professional primary prevention sessions.
