MANDIBULAR ADVANCEMENT DEVICES FOR SLEEP APNOEA

Obstructive sleep apnoea is characterised by repeated episodes of occlusion of the upper airways when sleeping, which is associated with a reduction in oxygen concentration in the blood and intense oscillations in heart rate and systemic and pulmonary blood pressure values. The main symptoms are snoring, non-restorative sleep and the resulting daytime drowsiness and lack of concentration. The short-term risks of the disease when undiagnosed are falling asleep suddenly (driving), reduced ability to concentrate, memory deficit and irritability. The long-term risks, on the other hand, are of a cardiovascular nature, i.e. an increase in the likelihood of high blood pressure with increased risk of heart attack and stroke.

A fundamental criterion to treating OSA (obstructive sleep apnoea) is a careful and multidisciplinary diagnosis: the centre of reference in our region is the Centro per i Disturbi Respiratori nel Sonno (Centre for Sleep Respiratory Disorders) in Arco.

Multidisciplinary treatment may include the use of mobile devices for mandibular advancement, which stabilise the tongue and increase the space between the tongue, soft palate and pharynx.

Our practice has many years of experience in installing these devices.
